Come tutte le città che sorgono sul mare Trapani ha avuto necessità di potenti mura e fortificazioni che la proteggessero nei secoli passati.

Trapani si affaccia su quello che fu un punto cruciale dei più importanti traffici economici marittimi del mediterraneo ed erano numerosi i pericoli che provenivano dal mare proprio per questa ragione. In troppi erano interessati a conquistarla per garantirsi una base operativa così vantaggiosa. Attraverso i secoli le mura si sono conservate fino a noi.
